We were able to detect the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal of a liquid sodium clinging to the interface of solid metal particles for the first time. In this study, we confirmed the difference in the relaxation times due to the difference in the interactions between liquid sodium and metal particles suspended in the liquid sodium. It was found that the surface of the micro titanium particles and liquid metallic sodium interact physically, not chemically.

Compacted bentonite has been considered as a candidate of engineering barrier material in many countries for the safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste. SKB set up an in situ experiment (named ABM project) to compare the stability of different bentonites under the conditions exposed to an iron source and elevated temperature (up to 130$$^{circ}$$C as maximum) at the $"A$sp$"o$ Hard Rock Laboratory, Sweden. Results for the Japanese bentonite (Kunigel V1) are summarized in the present paper. Mineralogical investigation using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) suggested that no indication of smectite transformation or newly formed clay phases were observed. However, a distinct change of exchangeable cations of smectite was indicated (i.e., from Na type to Fe type) in the bentonite at the vicinity of the steel heater. Physical investigation by measurements of hydraulic conductivity and swelling property suggested that no significant change occur in the bentonite even at the vicinity of the steel heater. Such results might be considered due to the limited portion affected by the iron-bentonite interactions and partially occurred ion exchange reactions. Chemical investigation based on the measurements of methylane blue (MB), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and exchangeable cations showed that the lateral distribution for these parameters were basically constant without the significant gradient.

A plasma source has been constructed for investigating plasma-surface interactions in a tokamak. It is a compact device with a total length less than 1 m, compared to other existing facilities in the world. However, it can provide with stable plasma beams of low energy ($$sim$$100 eV) and high flux ($$sim$$10$$^{22}$$ /m$$^{2}$$/s), close to the predicted edge plasma conditions near the ITER divertor. This report presents mainly its configuration and its characteristics, including influence of filament, arc discharge, magnetic field, bias voltage parameters, and so on, on plasma beam being delivered towards the sample. Also shown are the results of preliminary experiments of blister formation on tungsten samples irradiated by a deuterium plasma beam generated with the source.

Core seismic experiment of a full-scale single model for a fast reactor

A fast reactor core consists of several hundred core elements, which are hexagonal flexible beams embedded at the lower support plate in a hexagonal arrangement, separated by small gaps, and immersed in a fluid. Core elements have no support for vertical fixing in order to avoid the influence of thermal expansion and swelling. These days, in Japan, larger earthquake vibrations are postulated in seismic evaluations. So, it is necessary to consider vertical displacements (rising) and horizontal displacements of the core elements simultaneously because vertical seismic vibrations are larger than the acceleration of gravity. The 3D vibration behavior is affected by the fluid force of the ambient coolant and contact with the surrounding core elements. In this study, single-model vibration tests using a full-scale test model were conducted, and the basic characteristics of 3D vibration behavior of the core element were examined. In addition, structures restricting vertical displacements (dashpot structure) were devised, and their effectiveness was verified. As a result of the tests, the effects of the ambient condition (in air, in static water, and in flowing water), gap between the pads, vibration directions, vibration waves, and dashpot structures on the vibration behavior of the core element were examined. As regards the ambient condition, the vertical displacements were larger in flowing water that simulates the coolant flow than in air and in static water, because of upward fluid force in flowing water. As regards the gap between the pads, the larger the gaps was, the stronger the interferences due to horizontal displacements, and the smaller the vertical displacements were. The dashpot structure was verified to be suitable for reducing vertical displacements.
